Whenever a major awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a demand for the addition of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the passions of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types successfully include many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
- A different innovative game missed out that year
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
- Just some logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
