Together Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like standard body horror, but beneath Together exists a deep contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that come with any relationship a decade in. At their core, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
